Kanu’s Papilo FC win promotion to Nigerian National League

Papilo Football Club of Owerri owned by Super Eagles great Kanu Nwankwo has won promotion to the Nigerian National League(NNL) after beating T. Akoma of Warri 1-0 on Friday in Owerri.

A Chibuzor Ukaga solitary second-half goal separated Papilo FC and T. Akoma of Warri and was enough to earn them promotion from the Nationwide Division I to the NNL pipping Delta Stars FC of Asaba to the promotion ticket.

Former Super Eagles’ Captain, Kanu, who is the proprietor of the team, was present along with Mike Ikokwu owner of All Seasons Hotel and Grand Patron of the club.

Papilo FC, who earlier in the season won the Imo State FA Cup, finished with 19 points to pip Delta Stars to the ticket.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, a delighted Kanu reiterated that their target is getting to the topflight of Nigerian football.

He said: “My joy knows no bounds as this is just the first step. Premiership is the target. An opportunity to give back to the society and the instant results are just as it has been with me through out my playing career.”
